I offer a number of options for film on your session. Please keep in mind that working with film is always slower than digital, and there is an inherent risk of equipment or film failure that is naturally much higher than that of digital workflows. That being said, the results I believe are simply not reproducible with digital methods.

Quick Price Guide (prices are in addition to base package cost, although if your project is based entirely in film, let’s discuss the project first and I’ll likely offer a package rate lower than these costs):

  • 35mm film - 5 rolls/180 frames

    • Color (Portra 400): $300

    • Black and white (HP5+): $250

  • Medium Format 6x7 film - 5 rolls/50 frames

    • Color: $300

    • Black and White: $250

  • Medium Format Polaroid - 40 frames

    • Color or black and white: $150

    • Emulsion lift (lifts MUST be selected at session conclusion, before the emulsion hardens): $60 each

  • Large Format 4x5 film - 8 sheets (each sheet is one image)

    • Color: $350

    • Black and white: $250

35mm Film
The classic. 35mm film is what we all grew up with and love!

Black and White:

Color:

Medium format film: this film is higher detail than 35mm, allowing for much larger prints, and shallower depth-of-field.

Large format film: I offer film as large as 4”x5”. This film is incredibly detailed and offers an unparalleled control over the image in terms of tonality, depth, and geometry. It is also very slow to work with and very expensive, requiring the use of a dark cloth and careful metering of the scene. I rarely offer this type of film in color, as it is the absolute most-expensive type of photography. This type of photography is a standout for highlighting architecture, creating highly-enlargeable portraiture, and making fine art images. This size was frequently used for portraiture in the mid and late 1800s, when even what we now call “medium format” film was called “miniature film.”

Medium-format Polaroid: I use a unique, custom-built camera back that allows me to shoot modern polaroid film in my 1970’s-era medium-format camera. The results are very unique, allowing for the shallow depth-of-field of medium format, while offering the beautiful tonality and color of Polaroid film. Please note that these image are not very detailed, and likely will not print larger than 10x10”. That being said, I think the appeal is that they are physical, one-of-a kind objects. Please also see below for Polaroid emulsion lift prints.

Polaroid Emulsion Lift: Emulsion lifts are one of the most unique types of photographic prints. After a polaroid is taken, for about 24 hours it can be carefully peeled apart, and the layer of transparent gelatin in which the image is suspended can be delicately removed from the plastic protector. The sheet of gelatin can then be placed on another substrate, such as watercolor paper. The polaroid then assumes the texture of the paper, is larger than it was inside the plastic square, and can be manipulated in several ways, such as leaving folds or creases within the emulsion layer, giving a truly surreal and unique art object. An emulsion lift is $60, may only be performed on monochrome, Polaroid-brand film, must be done within 24 hours of a Polaroid being made. A photo of an emulsion lift does not do it justice!
